Falafel Jakoub – 8/10

Hermannplatz isn’t an area that’s short of falafel; come out of any U-bahn exit and you’re immediately surrounded by options for a quick, cheap on-the-go meal. However, it’s undoubtedly worth making the effort to venture slightly further away from the station, because Falafel Jakoub is a seven-minute walk away, five if you’re hungry, and their food is a cut above the rest.

It’s on Weserstrasse, surrounded by great bars (Dschungel, ilverfuture and Trude Ruth und Goldammer are all excellent, but really there are too many good options to keep track of) and it’s the perfect place to grab a quick meal on the way to drinks, but actually it’s quite nice as a restaurant as well. There’s plenty of space, a relaxed, cosy atmosphere, and free tea on tap, plus some rather lovely bright pink lighting effects.

The food is great value, with sandwiches starting at €2.50 and tellers around €6. I got a large, filling and delicious falafel and hummus sandwich for €3.

It comes in a thin, crispy pita-style bread, crammed with an implausible-seeming amount of falafel, hummus and salad. The falafel is soft and almost creamy-textured, and goes perfectly with the richness of the hummus. The salad is nice and fresh, and the sauces are really good. I’m not sure which one it was (maybe mango?), but there was one that was sharp and quite sweet, almost like a chutney, that really took the sandwich to the next level. My friend was impressed by how fast I devoured the whole thing.

Conveniently located, cheap and delicious, this is a really good option for a quick on-the-go dinner. I definitely recommend it next time you’re in the area.
